On Friday it was made official, American Airlines will be relocating its operation center in Moon Township to Dallas.
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said, “I guess the good news is, those 600 will be hired, they have the option of working, obviously they’ll have to relocate, and they’ll have to move to Dallas.”
Fitzgerald added, “We’re going to do everything we can, there’s Careerlink and other areas that we can help try and place people for some other opportunities that are here in this region. The good news is we are growing jobs. We grew 16,000 jobs last year alone in this region.”
American Airlines sent a personal letter to employees stating there is no specific timeline for the move. The airline went on to say that it won’t happen for several months and the ultimate goal is to have the complete transition completed within 18 months. Fitzgerald stressed only the operations center is going to be moved and not the maintenance facility.
Fitzgerald said, “for now, they are going to keep that there, that’s going to continue to operate for at least another year. They may re-evaluate that at the end of the year or early next year. We may get the same news again on that, I don’t know.”
US Airways and American Airlines $17.8 billion merger was completed in December.
