Another Book-to-Film crisis!

Fans are going crazy over who should and shouldn't be cast in the upcoming 50 Shades of Grey film.
Another Book-to-Film crisis!
Those 50 Shades of Grey fans are taking this whole casting of the movie business extremely serious. Women don’t play around when it comes to their fantasies being acted out in real life. And, unfortunately for the directors and anybody else involved with the highly anticipated movie, these women are not about to roll over and accept the casting decisions.

Earlier this week, the stars of the movie adaptation of the top-selling book were announced. Folks were not happy. Furious, disgusted and disappointed would be better words to describe the feelings of those who have been waiting for the book to be transformed into a real-life soft-core porn flick that would be acceptable to admit to watching.

Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson were chosen as the leads and fans are absolutely freaking out! There has even been a petition started on Change.org. Are you serious? That site is typically used to help people who are suffering some serious injustice at the hands of greedy banks or laws that are poorly written. It was never intended for people to use it as a way to stomp their feet and pout over a casting decision in a movie that will never be a blockbuster.

The producer of the film has had to defend himself on Twitter against the onslaught of curse-laden complaints. He explains casting isn’t always about looks alone. “Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actors, etc. So if your favorite wasn't cast, then it is most likely due to something on that list. Keep that in mind while hating and keep perspective,” he tweeted in response the outpouring of hate that flooded Twitter and the rest of the internet.

The big A-list stars didn’t want to do it is what he is saying. He had to take what he could get and the relatively unknown Charlie and Dakota landed the low-paying job. Keep in mind, this film, despite its popularity, is not going to be a big-budget film.

The author of the books made the announcements via Twitter and has also had to defend the casting choices. With this much outrage and general interest, her book clearly is cherished, which is certainly a compliment. She tweeted, “To all the supporters, lovers and haters - thank you so much for the passion that you have for this project. You all rock. All of you.” Anybody willing to start or sign a petition is seriously passionate.

Then there is the odd tweet from Dakota’s mom, Melanie Griffith. It is one thing to be excited your kid got a job, but it is just weird to be thrilled your daughter landed a job as a BDSM submissive. Shortly after the announcement and ensuing criticism, Melanie tweeted, “Dakota has been chosen to play Anna Steele in 50 Shades!!! Look out world! Here she comes!!!”

The biggest complaint most fans have about the casting decision is the fact that Dakota has limited acting experience. The mommy porn fans wanted somebody who has a couple of hit films under her belt and a little more talent. Alexis Bledel is the actress the fans have chosen to play the part of Anastasia Steele. Her big claim to fame was her role in the series, Gilmore Girls. Fans have also declared Matt Bomer as the real Christian Grey. You may remember him from Magic Mike.

This isn’t the first time fans have gotten ticked over casting decisions. Think back to just a couple of weeks ago when Ben Affleck was cast as Batman. It didn’t change the producer’s minds then and it isn’t likely these guys are going to change their minds.

Some may remember when Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were cast in Twilight. Kristen had very few roles and Robert had even less. Look at what they did for Twilight. Here is another one that sent fans into a tailspin. Jennifer Lawrence was a Hollywood nobody until she landed the starring role in Hunger Games. Everybody was hollering over that, until they saw her transform into Katniss.

Sometimes, it takes a little creativity and movie magic and voila! Charlie and Dakota are transformed into a believable Christian and Anastasia. You never know until you give it a chance.
