Beyonce shocked the world when she released an entirely new album in the wee hours of Friday morning. While most artists promote the heck out of an upcoming album release for months ahead of the date, Beyonce just dropped it like it was hot. Sorry, it had to be said. The album, aptly titled, “Beyonce” came out of left field much to the delight of her fans and the majority of her fellow musicians. Although their enthusiasm may cool a bit when they realize she just stole the chart.
Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears have all released albums in the last month or so and have all been competing for the top spot. They don’t need to worry their little heads about getting that top spot. Queen Bey took care of that and will probably remain there for a while. It is almost unheard of for an artist to release an album on a Thursday. New releases are typically reserved for Tuesdays and occasionally Mondays. She really wanted to surprise the world. It worked.
In fact, her midnight release has been so popular, she crashed iTunes. With millions of fans jumping on the site and downloading the fifth album from the former Destiny’s Child singer, the site crumbled. Beyonce is that powerful.
After Twitter blew up with the news that the album had dropped, there was a frantic rush to get it. Black Friday ain’t gone nothin’ on Beyonce’s power. According to Twitter, Beyonce’s name spiked by more than 500,000 mentions on the social-networking site immediately following the news she released an album. Of course, some of those mentions were messages of frustration about being unable to get the album.
However, despite fan’s delight that there was new music available, they may have been a bit shocked to hear they had to buy the whole album. Individual tracks were not available. There are 14 tracks in all, so the $15.99 price tag is fair. Beyonce explained why she surprised with the new album in a completely new way. She wrote, “I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans.”
It wasn’t just an album she dropped. The woman must not have slept the past year. She was on tour, being a mom, filming videos and recording an album. Oh yeah, she also wrote the songs and produced the thing. She dropped 17 videos as well. The videos are all teasers of what is to come. It is certainly an ambitious project. She explains she wanted people to see the music. In a video she released explaining her new album; she talks about how everything is visual for her. There is a story behind the music and she wants her fans to see it.
It is pretty genius the way she did all of this. While fans knew she was working on an album, they had no idea when they could expect it. All of the videos she shot were done in plain sight, with nobody the wiser. Cameras are such a normal fixture wherever Beyonce goes it didn’t seem out of the ordinary for her to be filmed out and about in various public places while on tour. Well played, Beyonce. Well played.
