Fiona Apple got her feelings hurt pretty badly during one of her concerts in Portland, Oregon. So badly, she ended up crying after she cursed out the rude person who was bold enough to say such things in the middle of a crowd of Apple fans.
It all happened on Thursday night. After singing her little heart out for about 90 minutes, Fiona was rudely interrupted by somebody in the audience who shouted out, “Get healthy!” Now, that may not sound super offensive, but Fiona Apple clearly took it as a serious insult. The heckler went on to say, “We want to see you in 10 years.” Ya, I fail to see where the insult part is, but that is the way it was taken by the singer as well as the crowd.
Fiona Apple was hurt and ticked and stopped the show so she could get her own dig in. And considering she had the microphone and was technically the boss of the show, guess who won? Fiona shouted, “I am healthy! Who the f-ck do you think you are? I want you to get the f-ck out of here. I want the house lights on so I watch you leave!” The comment was apparently directed at the singer’s weight. Not because she is overweight, but because she is a little on the thin side. That and well, even other people who were there couldn’t help but notice she was looking a little frail and “wild-eyed.”
A write for Stereogum describes Fiona Apple’s performance and even he seems to acknowledge she wasn’t exactly in the best place. He writes of her wandering around stage and just acting strange in general. The person who paid to see her perform was booted out of the show, but before the heckler was escorted out the door, there was one more thing that needed to be said, “I saw you 20 years ago and you were beautiful!” Ok, well she was like 16 or so—people change.
Once the person was evicted, Fiona Apple did her best to carry on. Unfortunately, the words clearly stuck with her and she sobbed her way through the song. Her adoring, remaining audience did their best to offer words of encouragement and advised her to ignore the criticism of one person. It didn’t work and she declared the event a “historically stupid night.” The show ended after she managed to get through that last song.
It is a little hard not to be concerned for Fiona Apple’s health. Looking at her now compared to 5 or 6 years ago, and it is pretty clear something has definitely gone awry. It isn’t just her thinness that is alarming. She looks gaunt. Her eyes are haunted and in general she does not look well. She is certainly not the first person to go down this dangerous path. If she is healthy, great. If she isn’t, hopefully that person who so publically called her out will have opened Fiona’s own eyes a bit so she will take care of herself.
