With over 500 million accounts signed up for Google’s free Gmail email service, it’s services like these in which a birthday should never go overlooked. This may be due to the fact that it is April fools day, as well as Google already releasing a April Fools Joke in the Pokemon Google Maps Game. Though this is a serious note and yes Gmail has already been around for 10 years an counting.
I can remember when I first signed up for the free Google service and thinking that this may infact be the revolutionary way for email clients to service users, one in which google claimed from day one. The first few year or so was all about the 1GB of free storage within the Gmail account, but as the internet has evolved so has the size of the average data size of an email.
Gif’s, files, videos and more have all been apart of this continue growth in the needed size of email storage, and since those early days Gmail has increased it’s free Gmail account up to 15GBs. Which is still more than 90% of what other email clients are providing free of charge, but it’s not just the free storage that entices people these days.
Google since the start has been working hard in developing applications that work alongside the Gmail client, specifically Google Drive, Google Docs, YouTube and more. Universities and corporations have been signing up in droves since the start, as Google services meet the requirement most users and business require in maintaining and operating a successful “life”.
Even Apple couldn't prevent their own users from switching to the google service, as a single email account can be compared to a digital social security number (US citizens). Any Gmail account can gain you access to millions of apps and also the vast and ever growing services from Google. Sixk of signing in with Facebook or Twitter? a Google Gmail account has joined the two and is now an option for 90% of websites that require sign in.
