PEBBLE-- Who would have thought a smartwatch would be the record holder for the most funds raised on Kickstarter. Pebble announced their new version of their smartwatch named Pebble Time, and after the kickstarter went live they announced yet another version, Pebble Time Steel. When there was 18 days left on their Kickstarter, pebble had already raised over $17 million to set the record, but now the funding is over the record is even higher, $20 Million.
With just over 78,000 backers for the highly anticipated Pebble Time, 142 of those backers contributed $5,000!. Those backers will receive 30 smartwatches from pebble, 10 in each of the 3 colors available. When the math is done, the watches for those 142 backers come to a mere $166.67, a price that would be manageable to resell for retailers.
It only took 17 minutes for Pebble to reach its funding goal and raised over $6 million in the first 6 hours alone. The previous record holder on Kickstarter was the “Coolest Cooler” that had raised $13.3 million.
The big jump in money contributed to Pebble was due to the announcement of the Pebble Time Steel. When announced many new backers were onboard and many of those that had already contributed went back and contributed more to get the steel version.
The Pebble Time will be released sometime in May, while the Pebble Time Steel will come out a few months later sometime in July. Having owned the first generation of Pebble, a Samsung Gear and a few Android Wear devices, Pebble was my favorite even without the color screen. The battery life and physical buttons actual are the better way to go as far as smartwatches, the competition watches were even more distracting and had a hard time dealing with water since it was all touch screen and it would act as if I was swiping the screen with my finger.
